App Review: OurPact

For parents and caregivers who are looking for a way to discreetly monitor their children’s use of their phones, OurPact is the way to go. There are many benefits for this app. It allows parents to set clear hours for phone use. There are ways to restrict access to certain parts of the phone during certain times of the day. This means that if kids shouldn’t be using their phones at night or during school, the app allows this to happen. Parents can also limit the amount of use of certain apps, such as YouTube and Safari, to a certain allotment of hours per day. Therefore, parents can either set these apps to be accessible during certain hours (maybe 3 PM to 10 PM) or can set a limit of 2 hours per day. If parents want to allow unlimited access to certain parts of the phone, such as texting, Kindle, or phone calls, they can make this happen as well. If parents are looking for more control over apps such as Snapchat and Instagram, OurPact provides this. There are even controls on the app for the phones.

On the other hand, the app can be restrictive and children will always know that their actions are being watched. This can make it a challenge to discuss phone safety with teenagers who sometimes feel like they are being punished for something that they didn’t do. What I love about the app is the control it gives parents over the actions of their children on the phone; however, at the same time, I don’t like that it often makes kids feel like they have lost an excessive amount of freedom. This app is perfect for what it is meant to do; however, it may not be right for everyone.
