Building Empathy During COVID: How To Do It

Without a doubt, the coronavirus pandemic has created difficult circumstances for families everywhere. Children have had to bear the brunt of it, as they often have difficulty understanding exactly what is happening and why it is taking place. It is important to focus on kids’ empathy during the pandemic.

How can you help your child understand what it means to be empathetic? A few tips you may want to keep in mind include:

  1. Focus on a specific phrase, “same storm, different boat.” This phrase is important because it helps children understand that everyone is being impacted by the same storm; however, some people experience it differently than others.

  2. You should model the behavior you want to see. What does it mean to be empathetic?

  3. Let children know that everyone is experiencing the same thing. We are all in this together.

  4. Help your child find ways to support other people. That way, they understand what it means to demonstrate empathy.
